6 important facts to remember about prednisolone while breastfeeding.

  • Prednisolone is a corticosteroid drug. No adverse effects have been reported about taking corticosteroid drugs while breastfeeding.

  • A small amount of prednisolone may enter into breast milk but that amount is very unlikely to cause any harm for the infant.

  • On the other hand, prednisolone is similar to some natural body hormones. These hormones are needed for breast milk production.

  • Anyway, avoid breastfeeding for at least 4 hours after taking your prednisolone dose, if the dose is high. High prednosolone dose may decrease the supply of milk.

  • If the you are taking prednisolone for a short period of time, there is no need to follow the above instruction.

  • Ophthalmic prednisolone has no effect on breastfeeding. However, to make sure that prednisolone does not reach breast milk at all, put pressure over the tear duct for a minute after applying prednisolone drops.

However, the most important thing is to consult your doctor or health care provider before taking prednisolone.
